Monday, November 19: Visit to the Poetry Club at Ft. Dorchester High

A pure delight to spend an hour or so with members of the Poetry Club at Ft. Dorchester High School this afternoon. Twelve of us sat in a circle and shared some words, lines, and poems. We did several activities, starting out with building a word bank and writing a group poem, which we read a couple of times, round-robin style. After looking at several strategies for writing poems, I had the pleasure of hearing some of the members read their poems.

Thanks to the Club and their sponsor, Donna Miller, who's a Media Specialist there at the school, for inviting me!

I have been calling Ann Mashburn my most favorite store that I've never set foot in for a while now, but that's all about to change because tomorrow I'm headed to ATL! Ann is hosting a Tomboy Style book party Friday evening in her Atlanta store from 6-8. So come on by if you're in the area and say hey, y'all!

"The West Country has been a magnet for freaks and mystics since medieval times. This swath of southwest England includes the impossibly green counties of Somerset, Devon, Dorset, and Cornwall. Pagans, Celts, druids, out-and-out charlatans, and ethereal goddesses have all been drawn to West Country's lush pastures and wooded knolls, bringing in their wake the scents of patchouli oil and weed." —Julia Chaplin in an excerpt from Gypset Travel.

Speaking of great shoes, I've just been made aware (via my friend Zinzi's AWESOME new blog Treehouse) of the recent launch of TEN & Co. Footwear. These aren't just great looking oxfords, designer Tory Noll sources vintage and antique Moroccan rugs and leathers from rug auctions, souks, Marrakech flea markets and the Atlas Mountains to create these hand-cobbled small-batch beauties. You're essentially stepping into North Africa when you wear a pair of TEN & Co.'s—can't say that about a pair of shoes everyday.

Save Money on 2013 Charleston Tee Times

I am pleased to announce that the 2013 Charleston Tee Times Golf Passbook is now on sale. I posted this announcement last year with respect to the 2012 golf season. For those unfamiliar with this passbook, it is a really great deal for Charleston golfers as well as those that visit the low country. What is this deal? Simple, it is a golf passbook or coupon book that gets you a one-time play at nineteen different courses in the Charleston area. (The area consisting of select courses within Charleston, Summerville, Mount Pleasant, Kiawah, and Seabrook). The passbook runs $169 (not including shipping and handling). The only additional fee you will need to pay is for cart fees which run anywhere from $20 - $50 depending upon where you play. The ocean course on Kiawah will charge a $100 additional fee for caddy services (gratuity not included). All in all, the golf passbook is a great way to save money and even more valuable to those travelers staying on Kiawah or Seabrook and want to play the immediate resort courses in the area without paying a fortune. That’s right, you can play all five Kiawah courses and two Seabrook Courses using the vouchers in this book. The only negative attribute to this golf passbook is that the golf tee times passbook vouchers are not transferrable to another individual, so if you do not use up all your vouchers, you cannot “lend” the unused one to a friend that may plan on going to Charleston area. Each passbook is designated with your name; and the clubhouse attendant will make sure you present identification when presenting voucher to cover green fees. Also, when playing the Kiawah resort courses, the passbook vouchers are only valid when playing after 11:00 am, so early morning play is ruled out.

I would recommend this purchase for those that live in the immediate area and even those that plan on getting in at least three tee times during their time in the Charleston area. (I figured it takes at least three plays to get your money’s worth with this passbook. This 2013 Charleston Tee Times golf book is also a great gift for the upcoming holidays.

At one point, I could never imagine having anything remotely worth blogging about. However, I love science and nothing would make me happier than sharing science with others. So that is what I'm going to do.
Specifically, the impetus for this blog is my participation in the SciFund Challenge, a crowdfunding initiative organized by Dr. Jai Ranganathan and Dr. Jarrett Byrnes.

So what is crowdfunding? Well, for a scientist like myself, it is a way to directly interact with anyone who is interested in supporting my research. Traditional avenues for scientific funding such as the National Science Foundation have funding rates lower than 15%, and these types of grants are especially difficult to obtain as a graduate student. If I think up an interesting research project, I can't rely on obtaining a large sum of money from a government agency to make it happen.
Crowfunding asks the question, "Why can't I get funding from anyone who thinks that my work is interesting instead?"
Beyond the nickels and dimes of funding a research project, a potentially greater impact of crowdfunding is the connections that can be forged between a scientist and his or her supporters. Unlike the highly technical, jargon-filled grant proposals that are reviewed by a committee of peers for a standard funding opportunity, a SciFund proposal is for the public and includes pictures, video, and incentives for funding (check out some of last year's SciFund projects here). Communicating is such an important part of being a scientist, and the opportunity to explain why your research is interesting to the general public is essential for both justifying your work and promoting the public awareness of science.
This year's SciFund projects go live on May 1st!

SciFund y'all!

In anticipation of the impending SciFund launch at midnight tonight, I am preparing to kindly badger all of my family/friends/colleagues with requests to check out my project (found here) and spread the word.
In the meantime, I am welcoming any questions about my project that I will answer here and link to the SciFund page.
While waiting, here are some pretty pictures of amphibians:
