The PGA tournament held at the Ocean Course on Kiawah is only a few weeks away; actually it is from August 9th through August 12th. Am I disappointed to not be in the low country to witness the world’s best golfers playing right here on Kiawah? Nope. I confess to having a soft spot for the game of golf whether I am playing it or watching it on television. The fact that 2012 PGA Championship (final major of year) is being hosted by Kiawah makes this event even more special. It would be a crime to have Pete Dye’s legendary Ocean Course not be used once again for a PGA event (last one was Ryder in ’91). In contrast to this hype, I also share a deep appreciation for the peace and tranquility of Kiawah and the low country. I visit this area because of the low traffic, sparsely populated beaches and bike trails, and unfettered shopping. The PGA week is anything but quiet. The villas, homes, courses and even beach will be jam packed. The Kiawah Island parkway is going to be congested as is Bohicket just trying to get on and off the island. Due to lack of parking, spectators are going to be getting bussed on and off the island each day. Forget trying to even venture to Freshfield’s or even out to dinner that week.
I applaud the economic boost the PGA tournament will bring Kiawah, Seabrook and Charleston. A healthy infusion of revenue into the local economy is always a good thing. Profits will be realized; especially with those home and villa owners commanding weekly rentals far above the typical August rental rates.
I can safely say this low country tourist will be deeply entrenched on PGA Championship coverage from the comforts of my air conditioned living room about a thousand miles away. When the dust settles and everything gets back to normal, Kiawah will be ripe for a visit again.
